Institutions for the disabled in Balkh celebrated the day with murals.
People with disabilities in Balkh complained that their challenges were not resolved, saying that they still suffer from lack of educational and job opportunities. They added that Afghan government has failed to live up to its national and global commitments, including implementation of the provisions of International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, to support the disabled.
People with disabilities want their ‘three percent right to work’ to be recognized, which they claim has not been properly implemented so far.
Najibullah Kohestani, Head of Martyrs and Disabled Directorate in Balk, however, said the Ministry of Government for Martyrs and Disabled had made plans to pay pensions, provide employment and training to the disabled and submitted them to the relevant departments, which would be implemented soon.
According to him, 4,000 people with disabilities caused by war have been registered with them and receive monthly pensions.
Meanwhile, people with disabilities in Balkh recited a resolution, a part of which read: “We call on the Ministry of Government for Martyrs and Disabled Affairs to amend the law on the rights and privileges of the disabled. The government should also support the congenitally disabled.”
It is worth mentioning that on the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, pictures and messages of attention to the disabled and their abilities have been painted on the walls in five crowded areas in Mazar-e Sharif.
