Balkh Mediothek with the cooperation of Germany celebrated the International Human Rights Day in Mazar-e-Sharif with the launch of a music program.
Mohammad Saber Naqshbandi, organizer of the event, said that many Afghans are still unaware of their rights and are struggling with countless problems.
Sayed Mohammad Sameh, Head of Human Rights Commission in the north, described the human rights situation as upsetting, adding that human rights situation in Afghanistan, especially in the north, was worse than last year.
According to him, last year there were 205 civilian casualties in Balkh, Jawzjan, Samangan and Sarepul provinces, while this year the number rose to 422, which shows more than a twofold increase.
Mr. Sameh added that 60 percent of the civilian casualties were caused by armed opponents, 12 percent by the government and 24 percent by unknown groups.
The head of Human Rights Commission in the north stated that due to the outbreak of coronavirus, they have not been able to travel to the provinces this year to investigate cases. However, 550 cases of violence against women have been registered, of which 173 have been processed and sent to the judiciary.
According to Mr. Sameh, the future of Afghans will be catastrophic if the situation is not changed, civilian casualties are not prevented, and an acceptable peace is not achieved.
Meanwhile, participants in the program maintained that only a ceasefire can prevent civilian casualties, otherwise the state of tragedy will continue.
December 10, International Human Rights Day is celebrated every year in Afghanistan whilst violation of human rights is continuing in an unprecedented manner, causing civilian casualties in big numbers.
