Balkh Information and Culture Department launched a program to promote reading culture among children in Mawlana Khasta library in Mazar-e Sharif city.
The head of Information and Culture Department, Mati-ur Rahman Karimi, says the program has been aimed at promoting the culture of book-reading among children and youth.
According to him, since books have a great impact on personality and mental development of children, various books, especially story books, have been provided for juveniles.
Mr. Karimi stresses on the role families play in raising youngsters and asks them to encourage their children to read books.
The head of provincial culture department added that in the near future, book-reading competitions will be held in orphanages, schools and universities in Balkh to further inspire value of reading.
Meanwhile, children say they visit the place daily and read books for 20 minutes, and are glad to have their favorite books.
It should be noted that in developed countries, children prioritize reading books from early age, but in Afghanistan, with the emergence of television, internet and games children and even adults are less interested in books, which according to librarians, teachers and parents is worrying.
