Officials from Information and Culture Department of Balkh exclaim that security threats in the province have led to the destruction of many monuments and caused illegal excavations.
“Out of 58 monuments in the province, only 25 have been restored, while others are on the brink of demolition,” Mati-ur Rahman Karimi, Director of Information and Culture Department in Balkh said.
Provincial cultural figures have criticized the government’s negligence in protecting cultural heritage and insisted on allocating funds for the reconstruction of historic sites.
The destruction of Buddha statue in Bamyan province by the Taliban 20 years ago on March 10 prompted the government to name the day as National Day for the Protection of Cultural Heritage.
Paying tribute to the day, officials of Information and Culture Department in Balkh maintain that access to ancient sites has become more difficult as security threats have increased.
