A number of young volunteers launched an awareness and graffiti campaign to keep the city of Mazar-e-Sharif clean.
Zakira Bakhshi, one of the organizers of the program, said that since the environment was deteriorating and no one paid attention to it, they decided to do volunteer work.
“Our activities started from schools and universities where we aimed to raise the level of awareness about the importance of environment,” she said. “So far, we have held 15 awareness campaigns in Mazar-e-Sharif and currently we’re painting a picture with a message that urges people to pay attention to the environment and take more responsibility in one of the most crowded walls of the city.”
At the same time, passers-by say people have little knowledge about the importance of the environment, and in order to have a good and clean city, awareness campaigns should be increased to educate citizens about the value of the environment.
It is worth mentioning that another program was held in Mazar-e-Sharif for two days with the participation of people from nine northern provinces, with the goal of preparing and revising an environment plan by the National Environmental Protection Agency. By this, they want to provide a better document to the world and convince them to provide funds for protecting Afghanistan’s environment. Reporter: Mahnaz Mowzon
